Hops (Humulus lupulus)

What is Hops?

Hops (Humulus lupulus) are cone-shaped flowers of the hop plant, primarily known as a bittering, flavoring, and stability agent in beer. However, for centuries, hops have also been used in herbal medicine due to their calming, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties. The female flowers are the main part used in teas and supplements.

Health Benefits of Hops

  • Sleep Aid: Contains compounds that help relax the nervous system, promoting restful sleep and reducing insomnia.

  • Anti-Anxiety: Acts as a mild sedative to relieve stress, tension, and anxiety.

  • Digestive Support: Stimulates the appetite and helps reduce bloating, gas, and indigestion.

  • Menopause Relief: Reduces symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings due to its natural phytoestrogen content.

  • Anti-Inflammatory: Contains antioxidants and compounds that may relieve pain and inflammation.

  • Hormonal Balance: May support estrogen levels and overall hormonal harmony in women.

  • Antibacterial: Has antimicrobial properties that may aid the immune system and promote gut health.

How to Make Hops Tea

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon dried hops flowers

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • (Optional) lemon balm, honey, or peppermint for taste

Instructions:

  1. Place hops in a teacup or tea infuser.

  2. Pour boiling water over the flowers.

  3. Cover and steep for 10โ€“15 minutes.

  4. Strain and drink warm, preferably before bedtime.

  5. Do not exceed 1โ€“2 cups per day due to its strong sedative effects.

Note: Hops tea has a bitter flavor. Mixing it with other calming herbs like chamomile or valerian root can improve both taste and effect.
